Abbey Road Live Cuts: Crystal Murray

Abbey Road Live Cuts: Crystal Murray

5th December 2024
We're excited to share the second episode of our new Live Cuts series. Produced in association with Because Music, the second instalment features Crystal Murray performing two live tracks recorded in Studio Three. Crystal performed Air and Starmaniak in one-take, with the recordings cut directly to vinyl.

Crystal Murray says “It was such a beautiful experience to record a live session at Abbey Road, a studio where all my favourite artists recorded and created such timeless music. These songs are a part of my journey, and I loved that our raw energy is now a part of this legendary place”.

With a distinctive sound that blends R&B, neo-soul, gospel, and electronic elements, Crystal Murray has quickly earned recognition as one of the most innovative artists of her generation. Her debut album Sad Lovers and Giants earned widespread praise for its genre-defying style, while her earlier EPs I Was Wrong and Twisted Bases showcased her lyrical depth and bold sonic exploration. Drawing inspiration from legends like Jeff Buckley, Cocteau Twins, and Massive Attack, Crystal continues to redefine what modern music can be.

Sessions were engineered by Gordon Davidson and assisted by Ed Farrell. Chrstian Wright mastered the tracks and cut the vinyl.

Celebrating the craft of recording and mastering, and echoing the way music was originally recorded when Abbey Road opened in 1931, the Live Cut sessions result in a 12” single for each release with the tracks also made available on streaming platforms.

Each episode is accompanied by an exclusive short film illuminating the creative and technical processes, alongside an interview with the artist. The launch season for Live Cuts is presented in association with Because Music, in celebration of the acclaimed label’s 20th anniversary.
