Abbey Road Studios Celebrate Alan Dower Blumlein's Birthday

29th June 2018
On this day in 1903, the prolific engineer and inventor of stereo Alan Dower Blumlein was born. Certifiably one of the greatest electronic engineers to have existed, Blumlein lodged the patent for what he called binaural sound in a paper which patented stereo records, stereo films and surround sound in 1931 whilst at Abbey Road. He and his colleagues made a series of experimental recordings and films in 1935 to demonstrate this breakthrough technology. Blumlein would develop many ground-breaking and hugely influential technologies including electrical television and airborne radar in addition to stereo. With thanks to the EMI Archive Trust.
