"When I first started to write music it was just me and Christian, he would encourage me to say whatever I had to say with my lyrics and the day we wrote this song was no different, I was hesitant in sharing how I really felt on the matter at hand and he ‘pushed’ me to overcome and let go.” — RoRo
Hailing from Barbados, singer-songwriter RoRo has today released her deeply meaningful new track Black - Palace Of Me in response to the global Black Lives Matter protests. Out now on Mahogany Recordings, the song has been mastered at Abbey Road by Christian Wright with all proceeds from the single going to Black Lives Matter and The Bail Project.
RoRo, whose previous singles include Dance With The Devil and Mine has taken the time to reveal a raw side to herself and her songwriting that is usually left unseen. Black – Palace of Me shows her solidarity, and spreads a message of hope. Speaking about the track, RoRo explains “I wrote this song a year or so ago. Every time I opened my social media, I would see a BLACK girl doing her 4C hair, a BLACK boy graduating college, a BLACK man embracing his daughter, just a lot of BLACK positive stuff. I did not realise at the time the impact it was having on me. I heard this beat and was influenced, compelled and moved to write these lyrics”.
Recording the song in just one take, Black – Palace of Me spreads RoRo’s message of positivity and is an uplifting reassurance of the support that she has seen across the Black community. In speaking on the subject, she quotes “I have a family and friends in America and so I am again influenced, compelled and moved to contribute somehow.”
The single has been mastered at Abbey Road by Christian Wright, however RoRo is no stranger to the studios, having already recorded twice here through a
BMI Song Camp and with Jerry and Ralph from
CHIC and
Courage. To show her support, proceeds from the single will be going to
Black Lives Matter and
The Bail Project. Listen / Watch
