Frank Arkwright talks about mastering 'Bring It On' by Gomez.

In 1998 Gomez released Bring It On it was a serendipitous release, perfectly timed just after the implosion of Brit pop to indulge the stranger tastes of a public that was rejecting the commercial corners of contemporary guitar music. Bring It On was exploring a tangent of guitar music that, as Elbow's Guy Garvey commented; "Captured the period so perfectly. It was a brave record, and as an entirely self-recorded effort, it was raw, undiluted and utterly authentic. Though it was the band themselves who handled recording - mastering of the record fell to Abbey Road's Frank Arkwright.

Now as the album reaches its 20th anniversary and receives a remastering by Frank and a special edition re-release, Frank spoke to us about his experience working on the album: "David Boyd, the founder of Hut Recordings came in to master some Embrace or Placebo tracks and he played me a demo cassette to sound me out on it. He signed some of my favourite bands. And as soon as he put it on I could tell that he had had answered the question about whether to sign them. First track I mastered was 'Whippin Piccadilly'. The songs got deeper and deeper as I went through the half inch tapes. The band came in and we had such a laugh, they were so funny and eccentric, full of ideas and very creative. They would always be up for pushing things a bit further."

"It was recorded in Liverpool at Parr Street studios and they produced it with Ken Nelson, there was some serious low end which was pretty out there at the time and some amazing vocals. Really deep and heavy, with amazing harmonies in the chorus. Ian, Ben and Tom all sang and they shared the lead vocals. I loved the D-Side of the Vinyl, check it out. When it came to remaster it, I got the original half inch tapes and instantly recognised them, like an old friend! I wanted it to be true to the original but benefit from the advance in technology to give it more detail, width and depth which I could do at my studio in Abbey Road in Hi-Resolution. It was a real pleasure to work on it again and I had great response from them.
