Having spent a large portion of his teenage years flipping between classical music and T.Rex records, Ian probably had the ideal preparation for life in the studio.
Ian trained at the Royal Academy of Music where he studied both cello and guitar - passions he retains to this day. He began his career in the royalties department at EMI, before bringing his knowledge of their classical catalogue into play as an engineer at Abbey Road in the 1980s.
With over 25 years as an engineer and over 15 of those years as a mastering specialist, Ian's understanding of analogue and digital technologies is comprehensive.
His experience spans an array of production titles across all genres, from classical to pop and rock. He's worked on recordings by Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, Herbert von Karajan, Karl Jenkins, Lloyd Cole and The Commotions, UB40, Spandau Ballet, Steve Harley, Julie Felix, Frank Sinatra, and Judy Garland.
He relishes the online mastering model and enjoys working with clients and artists from around the globe who can benefit from Abbey Road's expertise wherever they're located.
As well as mastering new recordings, Ian engineers the restoration and remastering of older material and his projects include CD and Super Audio CD productions. He appeared on the BBC Radio 4 programme The Art of Remastering broadcast in 2010, which explored this specialist topic.
Ian continues to remaster Cantonese pop music for Universal Music in Hong Kong, having totalled over 80 albums to date. More recently he is mastering to analogue tape for vinyl production in the Far East and back catalogue classical recordings for the specialist audiophile market in Europe.
