New "Madama Butterfly" recording No.1 in UK Classical Charts

Puccini

We're delighted to say that EMI Classics' new recording of Puccini's Madama Butterfly, recorded in Rome by Abbey Road's Jonathan Allen, went straight to No. 1 in the UK Classical Charts upon release two weeks ago.

Performed by the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia with Angela Gheorghiu and conducted by Antonio Pappano, the album was last week named as the Telegraph's classical CD of the week. The Telegraph's Rupert Christiansen says of the recording, 'a few years ago the doomsayers were proclaiming that the age of recording opera in the studio was dead, but here it appears to be alive and kicking'¦ it is very impressive in many respects, not least because of the ideal clarity and warmth of the sound engineering.'

Additional praise of the recording:

"Immaculately recorded, spacious and evocative." - The Times
"The sound is spectacularly good; spacious, warm, and superior to any previous set." - Music Web International
"The sound of EMI's studio recording is immaculately clean, with excellent balance and a realistic ambience." - All Music Guide
